5. Several of the screens were ripped so we couldn't open the windows. Others fell off the track in our hands when we went to open them.
9. The gas at the marina was $3.99 a gallon even though gas prices were $1.99 a gallon.
16. At one point the hot tub was running continuously and we had to call the marina to fix the problem.
Rented a pontoon here and was very disappointed; it was complete junk. The boat was listing quite a bit to one side (staff said it was because of the life jackets being stored on that side), and was dented and banged up. It actually looked like it had been in a wreck above the waterline. One side of the deck was destroyed and has a piece of aluminum pulled up that was just right to slice open someone's arm or leg. Engine made a continuous beeping noise every time it ran (low oil, low circulation, I think). I got a half-inch splinter in my foot from the decking at the marina. They get 2-stars for having a military discount and friendly guys to shuttle up and down the steep hill to the parking lot. Wouldn't come back. The marina itself and the rentals at Wolf Creek are much nicer.
11. The outlet cover to the slide water switch was broke and the electrical was exposed.
2. The upper deck steering on our boat did not work.
- Inability to pilot the boat from the upper deck. No control function
8. The upper deck vinyl on the benches was ripped and the dirty foam was sticking out. This isn't a big deal, but it doesn't seem like it would take much to staple this and make it look better.
I struggle with how to fully convey my disappointment and concern with this marina. I would note that I have lived in a boating community my entire life, so I am not going to comment on stupid, unrelated issues like poison ivy on a shore bank or poor fishing conditions. My list of deficiencies are based exclusively on mechanical, safety and customer-service related issues.
- Broken gas gauge. But hey, don’t worry, they have a real fancy stick ya shove in there and see how much ya got left. Thanks guys….or should I say MacGyver.
15. They don't tell you this, but there is poison ivy everywhere around Lake Cumberland. When you tie your boat up at night, you will be in contact with the poison ivy. It is certainly on all the ropes as well. If you go, plan to take gloves and watch your step. There is really no hiking around islands because the poison ivy covers the whole area. We had to go to the hospital because one person had it so bad. The poison ivy isn't the marina's fault, but people visiting may want to know.
12. The cooler on the front deck was cracked and the lid was not attached. We had to go back to the marina to request a new cooler. They were very good about replacing it and we appreciated it.
1. Although told that our refrigerator would run on batteries and we could turn off our generator, it did not and we lost a lot of food. We had to run the generator the whole time just to keep the refrigerator cold.
7. The welded railing on the boat was broke in several places.
Issues with the “new” boat:
Upon arrival, our boat had not been cleaned. Trash cans brimming with trash. (By the way, they claim they do not have a vacuum). While that was incredibly gross, the 91 degree cabin was more alarming. The staff’s resolution: “ya just gotta drop it a few degrees at a time”. Thankfully, we knew that was nonsense. Since it didn’t come down, they had to admit it wasn’t working. At all. To top it off, we didn’t have a hot tub. But, of course, we had already paid for it. Having none left, they offered to refund our money. Obviously. Unable to remedy the AC situation and no time to clean, we switched boats.
4. The cuddy cabins were not very clean. In one spot it looked like cat puke on the carpet and the carpet along the wall was thick with dirt.
- AC worked approximately 50% of the time. But only when you shut it off for a few hours and let evaporator coils thaw. And never ever below 78.
- Outboard motor completely exposed. Despite us pointing out that cover was missing.
14. Although the information given to us suggested great fishing, the lake is very deep and unless you are prepared with down riggers, fishing the lake is very slow and disappointing.
Last but not least, the staff could not work harder at DODGING their jobs. A direct quote from one employee to the other “ok. It’s hot. I’m gonna go hide until lunch”. And that was pretty much the theme.
If you are looking for a helpful staff of people with a great, laid back attitude this is your place. Houseboats are used, abuse and put through some tough conditions. The staff at Beaver Creek works through issues and does all they can to provide a great, relaxed and safe adventure for your group. We have take boats from this location five times now and have never left disappointed. Things do happen, things have not worked out but it's the overall experience that matters.
A number of other houseboat renters were having similar problems. I suppose if you rent these houseboat knowing they are not top of the line, you won't be disappointed.
- Toilets are completely problematic. You cannot call it a toilet if you are advised NOT to put toilet paper down it. Without being graphic, just understand – if you are uncomfortable pretending to be a “bear in the woods”……these are not the boats for you.
6. The dinning room table was sticky and nasty. We took a bed sheet and used it as a table cloth to cover up the table that would not come clean even with Clorox wipes. You may want to bring a table cloth and Clorox wipes.
10. Two light covers in the cuddy cabins had burn holes through them from bulbs. Another light was missing screws and dangling on the wall.
Excellent family fall experience! The boat was ready and in great shape when we showed up. It surpassed our expectations and was fun for all ages. Timely check in/check out and helpful staff. This was our first time on a house boat. First time users feel free to ask plenty of questions, their team will give you what you need.
- On yea, and my favorite: motor’s intermittent ability to start and stay running. Reported to marina with no response. Thankfully we got it running. When we got back, they said “yea, sometimes it’s hit and miss”
- Swimming ladder not attached – so it slams your foot between the boat and the metal ladder when getting in. We were lucky enough to figure this out when a child smashed her toe in it.
I fully believe these, and similar reviews will be used when this marina is inevitably sued and claims to have never been informed of these problems. Travelers beware.
13. There was one lounge chair on the top deck for 6 people. We requested more and they gave us 2 more.
The lake is beautiful. The people that worked for the marina were polite and helpful. Beaver Creeks houseboats however, lack attention to detail in cleanliness and maintenance.
3. You are told to bring certain toilet paper for use on the boat, but when you arrive, you are told not to flush any toilet paper. Bring what is comfortable and a lot of bags to dispose dirty toilet paper.
- Missing screws from the slide & missing screens on windows
